Buffalo Community Refrigerator

The power of the goal should never be dismissed. When I think of the potential that each of us possesses, I think of Jessie Reardon, the person who founded Buffalo Community Fridge. While this concept of “public refrigerators to feed the hungry” isn’t entirely new, it is new to Buffalo.

Food, Reardon says it’s ‘for the community by the community’. Similar to how the Little Free Library concept works, it’s up to the community to make sure there is always food in the fridge. “Most of them are from the neighbors,” Reardon explains. “There is a woman who goes to a farm and drops off food every week. People feel good about helping others in need. This is one of the reasons I became a nurse.

These refrigerators are not only there to provide food, they are also there to serve as community anchors. The refrigerator on East Ferry has become a rallying point for coat (and other necessities) drives and other community events. “We’re having a turkeys campaign closer to Thanksgiving,” Reardon says. “The fridge is open to everyone – so even if you just want to stop and say hello, this is all about fostering a caring community. “

Second Chance Hosting Network

Second Chance Sheltering Network is an organization based solely on volunteer foster homes that specializes in stray, orphaned, abandoned and abused cats. All of their rescues are sterilized, given all required vaccines, dewormed, checked for Feline Leukemia / FIV, and placed in foster homes until they can be presented to a local adoption center.

All applicants interested in adoption are carefully screened to ensure they are suitable as an adoptive parent. If approved, adopters benefit from continued support during the transitional period of adaptation to the new home.
While there is always the temptation to give a loved one a pet, not everyone is prepared for the responsibility of caring for a cat or dog. Adopting a cat or a dog is a huge responsibility that lasts the life of the animal, which can range from 10 to 20 years. It is a commitment. Instead of taking the plunge and adopting an animal that you might not be ready to care for, why not donate to Second Chance Sheltering Network. The money is used to take care of the animals in the community and when you are finally ready to adopt, they can help you find the right animal for you and your family!
